Our lens

Our eye for the coastline

An independent journal written by photographers who spend their best hours looking back at the land.

Lookoutrazompl began as a shared notebook kept on charter weeks along the Cornish, Breton and Dalmatian coasts — notes on which cliffs caught the evening light, which coves held still water in the morning, and which lighthouse photographs were never worth the swell. Over time the notebook grew into this journal.

We are independent. We do not sell charters, take commissions from operators or accept payment for placing destinations in our pages. When we mention a place, it is because the photograph it offers from the water is worth describing.

How we write

We lead with the photograph, then explain the conditions that make it — distance, movement and light. We keep inspiration and access deliberately apart, and we repeat one principle until it becomes habit: a photographic opportunity is not navigational clearance. Decisions about where a vessel goes belong to its skipper, working from current charts, forecasts and local rules.

We would rather describe a view you watch from a distance than encourage a pass you should not make.

Corrections and leads

Coasts change, and so do the rules that govern them. If you spot an outdated access note or know a viewpoint worth recording, please send us a viewpoint lead.
