Questions from the aft deck
The questions photographers ask us most, usually as the anchor goes down and the light starts to turn.
Do I need my own yacht to photograph coastlines from the water?
No. Skippered charters, small-group photography voyages and licensed boat tours all give access to waterborne viewpoints. For a first trip, a skippered charter lets you concentrate on the photographs while someone experienced handles the boat. More on trip planning.
Does a great viewpoint mean it is safe or legal to anchor there?
No. A viewpoint describes what you can see. Anchoring depends on depth, seabed, weather, protected zones and local rules, decided by the skipper with current official sources. This distinction runs through everything we publish.
What shutter speed should I use from a moving boat?
Start at 1/500 s from a yacht's deck and 1/1000 s or faster from a tender or with a telephoto lens, raising ISO as needed. Time your frames to the pause at the top or bottom of a swell.
Is a tripod useful on a yacht?
Rarely. A tripod transmits the hull's motion into the camera. Hand-holding with a fast shutter and a braced stance is usually sharper. Keep the tripod for shore sessions.
Which lens is most versatile for seascapes from the water?
A 70–200 mm zoom, which isolates cliffs and lighthouses from a respectful distance, paired with a 24–70 mm for wider scenes and life aboard.
Can I fly a drone from a yacht?
Sometimes, but rules vary by country and many coastal parks and reserves restrict drones. Check national aviation rules and local restrictions first, and remember that recovering a drone onto a moving deck is genuinely difficult.
How do I protect my camera from salt spray?
Use a dry bag, wipe lenses often, change lenses in shelter and wipe the body with a cloth lightly dampened with fresh water each evening. Let gear acclimatise before moving between cabin and deck.
When is the best light for sea cliffs from the water?
It depends on orientation: west-facing cliffs glow in late afternoon, east-facing ones at dawn. Side light reveals the most texture. Read more on coastal light.
Can I land in the hidden coves I see from the boat?
Not automatically. Some coves are private, protected or closed due to rockfall. Check local rules and follow the skipper's decision.
